Emergency Preparedness and Natural Gas

This information came out in the Questar Gas May Billing. Recent earthquakes demonstrate the types of conditions victims experience and underscore the need for preparedness, including an understanding of your natural gas service and how it might be impacted by an earthquake or other major disaster.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emergency Preparedness and Natural Gas

(By Questar Gas – May Billing)

Turn Off Your Natural Gas Meter Only If:

1. You smell natural Gas

2. You hear natural gas leaking (hissing, blowing or roaring sound)

3. You see structural damage to your home

4. There’s fire in close proximity to your home

5. Questar makes the request

6. Then, turn the meter off only if you can do it safely!!

Remember:
It may NOT be necessary to turn your meter off after an earthquake or other disaster. Natural gas meters should only be turned on by a qualified professional.

It’s a good idea to be familiar with the look and sound of your gas meter under regular conditions and to know where the shut off valve is located and how to turn it off.

There are many things you can do to increase your personal preparedness for an earthquake or other disaster. Have an emergency plan and acquaint your family with it. Stock emergency supplies; secure breakables.
